“I lost my virginity in a rape,' Lovato says in her new YouTube documentary, Dancing with the Devil, revealing that a fellow actor sexual assaulted her when she was 15 and starring on a Disney Channel show, most likely Camp Rock. Lovato said she told an adult, but nothing happened, and the two had to keep working together. “My #MeToo story,” Lovato says in the documentary, “is me telling somebody that somebody did this to me, and they never got in trouble for it. They never got taken out of the movie they were in.” As Jo Livingstone notes, Lovato's documentary may put a dent in Disney's purity culture. Livingstone adds: 'The trauma of her assault was compounded by confusion, Lovato says, stemming from Disney’s insistence that its child actors maintain an image of sexual purity. She was a 'little child star role model who has a promise ring,' she says, one of 'that Disney crowd who publicly said they were waiting until marriage.' The image she was expected to maintain publicly was so at odds with her private experience that she couldn’t identify the encounter as rape until much later. We have known at least since Shirley Temple’s heyday that working in entertainment as a child can be psychologically damaging. Disney appears to have fostered a particularly mind-warping kind of gendered culture, coupling the mandatory appearance of sexual purity with an unsafe working environment. Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera were both asked whether they were virgins at press conferences, while other former Disney child stars, including Bella Thorne and Jordan Pruitt, have gone public with stories of being sexually abused during their time at the company. Was Lovato’s case a one-off, or part of a systemic problem? Sexual abuse will always be an issue for a company that courts children, either as performers or members of an audience. It seems odd that Disney—a company that trades in paid images of children and has devoted a peculiar amount of energy to branding its stars as virginal—has never taken any kind of formal responsibility for apparently failing to safeguard people like Lovato from sexual abuse. Lovato is now swinging hard at Disney in the court of public opinion. She could probably only have done it now: Dancing With the Devil is a portrait of a talented addict struggling with the kind of trauma-driven behaviors that the media has only very recently adapted to sympathizing with instead of vilifying. The New York City Police Department announced Monday evening the arrest of a suspect accused of assaulting an Asian-American woman on Sunday morning in Manhattan.The NYPD apprehended and charged 27-year-old Erick Deoliveira with assault as a hate crime and criminal mischief as a hate crime, per NY1. Original StoryABC 7 NY reported that the 37-year-old woman was on her way to an Asian-American rally when the man took a sign she was carrying to the rally, stomped on it and threw it into the garbage. When the woman questioned why he did that, the suspect punched her twice in the face with a closed fist. The woman suffered a cut to her lip and a sprained ankle — sustained while she was chasing after the suspect. She was taken to Lenox Hill Healthplex Hospital for treatment. The suspect is described as being approximately 6'1" tall, 200 pounds, medium complexion, slim build with black hair. He was last seen wearing a red Chicago Bulls hooded sweatshirt, blue jeans, a black baseball hat, a black face mask, black sneakers and carrying a green backpack, per ABC 7 NY. SAN FRANCISCO — An elderly San Francisco woman for whom nearly $1 million has been raised in the wake of an unprovoked street attack plans to donate the funds to fight racism targeting the Asian American community, her family said.The March 17 attack on Xiao Zhen Xie, 75, drew international attention after she fended off her attacker on Market Street with a wooden board.Steven Jenkins, 39, who was arrested at the scene, is also accused of attacking 83-year-old Ngoc Pham moments before he reportedly punched Xie in the eye and is suspected in a separate physical altercation 30 minutes earlier. Jenkins has been charged with two counts each of assault and elder abuse, KRON reported.Xie and Pham are among the latest victims in a recent wave of attacks on residents of Asian descent in California’s Bay Area.An online fundraiser with a goal of $50,000, established to help pay Xie’s medical bills, has since raised more than $935,000, and her grandson, John Chen, told KPIX that the family intends to donate the funds toward fighting racism targeting Asian Americans. In a Monday update to the family’s GoFundMe page, Chen wrote:“When we visited our grandma yesterday and today her overall mental and physical health has improved. Her eye is no longer swelled to the point of not being able to open it. She is now starting to feel optimistic again and is in better spirits. She said we must not [submit] to racism and we must fight to the death if necessary. She also stated multiple times to donate all the funds generated in this GoFundMe back to the Asian American community to combat racism. She insists on making this decision saying this issue is bigger than Her. This is my grandma, grandpa, and our family’s decision. We hope everyone can understand our decision.”Meanwhile, an online fundraiser benefiting Pham with an initial goal of $25,000 has generated nearly $300,000 in donations, KPIX reported.According to the TV station, witnesses said Jenkins had also been involved in a separate physical altercation roughly 30 minutes before assaulting Xie and Pham. Police said that Jenkins then assaulted Pham as he walked away from a farmers market, after which a security guard chased him on foot. Then, as Jenkins fled the area, he assaulted Xie, and she retaliated.
